Join us for our 50th anniversary conference taking place virtually on the Zoom events platform April 16-18, 2025.

At ACTLA, we have established a legacy of tutoring and learning assistance and witnessed the transformative impact our work has had on students, staff, faculty, administration, and institutions as a whole. Now more than ever, our work must continue to facilitate what our mission statement affirms: student empowerment, restorative justice, and the transfer of cultural knowledge within our global communities. ACTLA 50 invites you to reflect and consider:

Our Roots: ACTLA has nurtured strong roots across our member institutions, colleges, and universities more broadly, cultivating an environment of collaboration within and outside higher education spaces that prioritize student-centered pedagogy and equitable learning outcomes. As we move towards our next 50 years we must reflect and ask ourselves: have our identities as learning support specialists, tutors, Supplemental Instruction leaders, and peer coaches become more visible, pedagogically and structurally? How has the role of a tutor changed in the last 50 years of ACTLA and how will it continue to change?

Our Future: With time comes the evolution of positive and progressive educational opportunities built on the shoulders of change agents who came before us.  As we look forward, it is our responsibility to forge intentional and representative practices that combat the current and future challenges that the state of our education system faces. We find ourselves in an uncharted educational landscape, navigating technological advances with new modes of learning and inevitable changes to the state of education. Together we must consider how to adapt and evolve tutoring and learning support for the next 50 years.

Conference Strands

  • Intentionality: How do we create and sustain spaces of empowerment for our students to succeed that focuses on intentionality, inclusivity, and accessibility?
  • Community: Community is what built ACTLA over the last 50 years and working in community is what will shape ACTLA in the next 50 years. How do we build community within our centers and restore humanizing relationships with campus partners?
  • Ensuring Access Using New Practices/Technologies: What strategies are being developed and executed to support students equitably in the changing landscape of technology within higher education?  What can ACTLA do to support others in achieving universal design?
  • Recognition of the 50th/those that have come before: In giving flowers to those who came before us, what stories can you tell that highlight the most important lessons you've learned in your work, and what will you share with the next generation of tutoring & learning assistance? (Feel free to name-drop and recognize who impacted you as an educator and person!)
  • Interdisciplinary work: A common theme across this work is that peer educators serve multiple roles and wear multiple hats within their peer educator title.  How is tutoring/SI/etc  more than just learning assistance?  How does this translate across university structures?
