Presenter: Leonard Geddes, Associate Dean of Co-Curricular Programs, Lenoir-Rhyne University

Research shows that metacognition changes learning environments. Students with greater metacognitive awareness consistently outperform their peers. Educators who infuse metacognitive strategies into their instruction transfer ways of thinking to their students, in addition to delivering content. And learning support systems that employ a metacognitive approach, teach students how to think and learn deeply across academic contexts and tasks. Metacognitively aware students think strategically, read efficiently and write deeply. Let’s create rewarding teaching and learning communities! The Transforming Good Students into Great Learners preconference session will show educators how to create learning environments where critical thinking and deep learning are attainable, measurable and common. More than 30 four- year & two-year, public and private institutions have participated in a Transforming Good Students into Great Learners workshop, and the results are impressive!

Participants will:

  • Be equipped to incorporate metacognitive strategies into instruction and learning support

programs

  • Be able to provide direct metacognitive assistance to students experiencing academic

problems

  • Be able to provide educators and students a framework for thinking and learning deeply
  • Be able to directly and efficiently improve students' reading comprehension

Video modules, live demonstrations, group exercises and presentation tools will be used to engage participants. Participants will leave with a strategy for leading sessions in a variety of context within their respective institutions.
